As populary reported, the Belgian’s one year extension includes a clause that will allow him to leave the club for £25million during the summer until two weeks before the transfer window closes.
The 29 year old has been in fine form this season and has been the club’s only fit central defender for the most of the campaign due to the injuries suffered by Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld.

If Spurs had not extended his contract, it would have meant that they would have missed out on the former Ajax defender on a free transfer next summer and it also prevents him from talking to foreign clubs from the beginning of this month about a possible summer switch.
There now has to be an urgency at the club to try and finally agree terms over a new long-term contract, which has so far shown to be a problem .
